John Smyth was a clergyman of the Church of England. Mr. Smyth and part of his London congregation had to flee to Holland because of his separatist views. On one side of him is the "Mayflower", because it was out of his congregation that the pilgrim fathers came to Massachusetts Bay. The other symbol is that of a building in Amsterdam, the city where Smyth and his congregation settled. There, under Mennonite influence, they adopted Believers' Baptism and established the first English-speaking Anabaptist congregation.
