Priesthood of Believers

Dr. William Bullein Johnson (1782-1862) was a champion of a principle we call the "priesthood of believers."  In his sermons, writings, and actions, he advocated each Christian's duties and rights in a New Testament church.  His impressive resume includes: President of Triennial Convention, First President of Southern Baptist Convention, President of the South Carolina Baptist State Convention, and co-founder of Furman University.  In my presentation, I attempt to reveal the profound thoughtfulness and the inner struggles of a religious leader caught between a culture and a religious principle.
